Solar energy can be harnessed using solar PV panels (sometimes referred to as modules) to generate electricity. These solar PV panels come in various forms and can be integrated directly into the fabric of a building.

A grid-connected system links the solar PV array to the existing mains electricity supply, so that solar power is utilised within the building or exported to the grid when there is a surplus. Photovoltaic or PV cells are semiconductor devices that convert sunlight directly into electricity. Direct sun produces the most power, but some electricity is generated even on overcast days.
